Gottfried Keller’s novel, here adapted for the theatre, tells a modern version of Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, with the plot set in a 19th-century countryside milieu. The young couple do not see a future for themselves and choose to escape by means of a double suicide in the river. The aim of the design was to lend the universal symbols of the heart and skull a new meaning by following a different visual approach. Reduced to their essence, the mood in the countryside and the water of the river are only hinted at.
